You Have Received A Psst!

September 18th, 2008

We’re experimenting with sending you a facebook-like email when you receive a Psst from another nrme user.

Used with the ‘Your Pssts’ inbox in version 1.20 of nrme, this means that you’ll be able to get a Psst from someone when you’re not online, get the update in your email and go back to nrme to read and reply to the Psst.

We hope you like this new feature.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

New nrme available today!

September 16th, 2008

Version 1.20 of nrme is available from today.

Version 1.20 gives users some new options:

  • nrme - gives messages from close by
  • almost nrme - gives messages from a larger catchment area
  • nrme world - shows the most recent messages from around the World
  • your pssts - an ‘inbox’ for Psst messages

Using nrme world and your pssts together, nrme can now be used as a global chat application.

The new version also has a built-in help system, and a sexier UI.

We’ve been concentrating with this version on the ’single player game’ so that users have an easier time of adopting and enjoying nrme.

Also - I was interviewed today on appcraver, the interview is
here.

If you have any questions or comments, please let us know.

nrme version 1.20

September 8th, 2008

nrme version 1.20 will hopefully be up on the App Store later this week.

We’ll write more about it and its new features over the next couple of days.

New Update And Comments

August 25th, 2008

Nearly a week after we launched and things are going great so far.

We started it all off with this 2nd write-up on Techcrunch.

No major application bugs, but we have had a couple to do with user signups, so we’ve put a new version into Apple today which fixes those and should make the signup process a lot smoother. It should go live in the next few days.

The new version also opens up the catchment area for messages a little. We don’t want to make it too wide, and we don’t want to make it so small that you can’t get messages from someone in the next block, so we’re balancing those requirements and will be playing with the numbers for a while I think.

We’ve also had a couple of great write-ups online:

> Tom O’Keefe wrote this nice piece on TOKiBiz.

> and this on LiveJournal.

We’re working on some new cool stuff for release in the next couple of weeks which I think will really get nrme much closer to where we want it to be.

nrme is LIVE!

August 19th, 2008

We’re live! v.100 is now on the App Store :-)

We’re really happy with v1.00. It’s been a lot of hard work, but it’s wonderful to see it come together and have real users signing up from all over the World.

Of course we have the problem of waiting for lots of users in any particular area, so we ask that you’re patient, add to the conversation and then enjoy the results. - more users are arriving every day

Any product suggestions? Please email us at: info@nrme.com

Union Square

August 13th, 2008

Spent today in San Francisco (our beta/test city) checking nrme’s speed and mapping. It all went very well.

Union Square has always been the center for our test data and so it was a great thrill to stand in the real Union Square and use nrme to tell those around me about what was happening using a real version of nrme running on a real iPhone.

If all goes to plan, nrme should go live this week!

We’re concentrating on making sure that everything works great in San Francisco, but this first release will actually work anywhere in the World.

Like all new information-swapping/conversational systems, early nrme users will have to be patient as others join the system - we’re hoping that they like the idea of nrme enough to give us good feedback, and be patient while the system takes off.

Nearly There!

August 8th, 2008

Just a quick note at the end of a busy week - We’re nearly there! Our iPhone team has done a great job on the native iPhone Application which is finished and in final testing and now we’re just finishing and cleaning up the server-side application.

We’re not ones for announcing launch dates (because they always get you in trouble!), but we’re getting close and I for one am looking forward to hearing about what users think of nrme after all these months of hard work.

iPhone Sales!

July 23rd, 2008

Just back from lunch with our trusty company lawyer at a restaurant near the Apple Store Palo Alto. Amazing to see 20+ people in line at 12:30pm and 25+ people in line after 2pm!

This is 12 days after the iPhone 3G came out and people are still able to convince themselves that they have to have one right-now, no waiting for a couple of months, no fear of being in line for a couple of hours - Wow! Amazing!

When you think that 99.9% of these people have never even touched an iPhone 3G until the Apple Store person gets theirs out of the box during the activation process, it’s even more mind-blowing.

iPhone 3G and the Application Store truly are somewhere new and Huge for us application developers to play.

nrme on The T4 Show

July 20th, 2008

Michael over at the T4 Show interviewed me yesterday about nrme and some of our plans. Michael is a very relaxed interviewer and I think the chat went well.

You can listen to it here.

The Map

July 16th, 2008

Each iPhone Application already available on the Application Store implements their map display differently. Some work and look great, some of them just look great(!), and some of them don’t look good and don’t work well.

The main complaints in the App Store reviews seem to be that the maps are slow and have basic features, such as zoom, missing. Apple and Google have certainly set the bar very high with the iPhone’s built-in mapping application.

For nrme we’re listening to what users are saying about other maps and working hard to make ours responsive with zoom in/out and great looking icons - see image here.

App Store

July 10th, 2008

Just been playing with the App Store for the 1st time. Apple and all the developers seem to have done a great job. Quality is mostly high and professional.

My hope is that the App space won’t become as crowded as Facebook’s. Just because you can write and publish an App doesn’t necessarily mean that you should!

The best and most polished apps will obviously come from anyone (big company, established developer, small group, guy in his garage) who has the user experience in mind, as well as the aim to match Apple’s own Macintosh / iPhone-style quality.

Well done to Apple and congratulations and good luck to everyone publishing this weekend! Exciting Times!

Latest Build

July 3rd, 2008

Just been playing with the latest iPhone native app build:

  • Our new UI is looking really clean
  • The user sign up and log in screens are in place
  • The 1st pass of the map is working, and
  • The number of bugs is dropping rapidly

- great progress!

A few days later…

July 1st, 2008

It’s been a few days since our Techcrunch mention last Thursday night and interest in nrme is booming!

We’ve read through all the comments on Techcrunch and on the various mentions we’ve had on other blogs, and they’ve given us alot to think about. Mainly we feel that the bar of expectation is set high and that hopefully our plans will address those expectations nicely.

Some of the best blog mentions we’ve had in addition to the Techcrunch one are:

here, here and the Washington Post Online.

(yes, the Washington Post is a copy of the Techcrunch article as part of a deal between both parties, but it’s a thrill and honor to be mentioned there anyway).

Some of our favorite comments so far have been:

  • That sounds killer. I’m gonna have to get me an IPhone now.
  • seems interesting bro, let me try it!!!!!
  • User-based content services face an uphill struggle to generate enough initial content (this will largely fall to the beta testing community). Nevertheless, if nrme get it right, I can imagine this could become one of the truly “sticky” iPhone apps. Advertising revenue opportunities should be strong here - both for regular location-based promotions of happy hours etc., but also one-off, live promotions.

OK - back to work now on finishing nrme for our San Francisco Beta Test - we’ll probably only take a break for July 4th and to stand in line next week for a few 3G iPhones! ;-)

nrme Gets A Great Write Up On Techcrunch!

June 27th, 2008

Jun 24th: Yesterday we went over to Techcrunch in deepest Atherton, CA and demo’ed nrme.

Today they’ve done a great write up.

It’s really wonderful to see our work coming together and having the guys at Techcrunch give it such a positive review. When you’re working hard on a new product you always worry that no one will like it, and the Techcrunch guys are really the first group we’ve shown it to.

So - their reaction is a really mood booster and gives us energy for the final push to get the 1st release out the door :-)

Many thanks to Michael, Jason, Heather and all the Techcrunch guys.

It LIVES!

June 18th, 2008

First running native application on real hardware today! - always a great thrill to see your baby come to life.

I’ve seen it happen many times and it’s always a great surprise. It wakes you up, cheers you on to continue the hard work and re-affirms that your original idea was a good one.

The Database and Application teams are working hard and everything is coming together nicely.

Our Logo

June 10th, 2008

This is our new logo:

nrme logo
It’s perhaps still a work-in-progress, but so far we really like it.

Our tag-line ‘Where? Who? What?’ is a backwards version of the old journalistic rules of news telling: “Who? What? Where?”.

‘Where? Who? What?’ tells what we’re aiming to do really well.

Apple WWDC

June 10th, 2008

Just got back from the keynote speech at the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco. Was in line from 6:45am to see mainly Steve Jobs speak at 10am!

The new 3G iPhone was announced. Not the smaller, video-conferencing, device that had been rumored this last week online, but a nice new addition to the iPhone family non-the-less. About 3x faster for browsing and moving data around.

Probably the biggest announcement was for Apple’s new .me service (see www.me.com) which really validates our name too  :-)   The quickest way to describe .me is that it’s like an Exchange server with additional multi-media capabilities for people without an Exchange server - Apple really are going to do very well with .me

Apple have sold 6m iPhones so far Worldwide. By the end of ‘08 they hope to have at least 10m in 70 countries!

Hopefully nrme will be installed on quite a few of those 10m iPhones.

1st Post!

June 2nd, 2008

nrme.com has gone live today!

We’ve been working away quietly on nrme for a couple of months now.

We’re still working hard on the iPhone native application, all our multi-database work is done and running well.

We’re about to start showing nrme to some press and company friends.

nrme.com is a small company aimed at bringing the best iPhone location-based social network to iPhone users everywhere.
